    NEWTOWN -- A motor vehicle accident with injuries is causing a traffic jam on Interstate 84 west near exit 9. Newtown dispatched its fire department and an ambulance at 7:02 p.m. Further information is not available at the moment.




    Danbury Unitarians to join New Sanctuary Movement

    DANBURY - The Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Danbury voted Friday to join a national, faith-based movement that assists families targeted for deportation by the federal government. The vote was 67-7. The church is the first in the state to join the New Sanctuary Movement.




    Danbury woman charged with DUI

    DANBURY - A 36-year-old city woman was charged with driving under the influence and evading after allegedly leaving the scene of a two-car accident on West Street Saturday. Police said Anniemarie Tallman struck a car and then kept driving. No injuries were reported.




    Six arrested on Ives Street

    DANBURY - Three people were charged with inciting a riot Saturday morning after allegedly yelling obscenities and refusing to leave Ives Street after police told them to clear out. Police said the incident happened shortly after 2 a.m., as the bars and clubs along Ives Street were closing, a weekend ritual that puts hundreds of people on the street.




    School official: Westport students sharing nude pictures

    WESTPORT (AP) -- Westport school officials say middle and high school students have been sharing nude pictures of themselves electronically. In a letter and e-mail, Superintendent Elliott Landon said the video and still images show students engaging in inappropriate acts while nude in their homes.




    Sen. Ted Kennedy hospitalized with symptoms of stroke

    BOSTON -- Sen. Edward M. Kennedy was hospitalized Saturday after becoming ill at his home, his office said. There was no immediate word on his condition.

    NEWTOWN -- The bomb scare at Newtown High School, which evacuated 1,719 students last week during Advanced Placement exams, was not the town's first.School officials and police have responded to several similar threats at Newtown Middle School during the school year.

    NEWTOWN - A Monroe man was charged with drunken driving, possession of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia early Sunday morning, according to police.

    Goldstein delivers win for Panthers in Cooperstown

    COOPERSTOWN, N.Y. -- Pomperaug High pitcher Kyle Goldstein pitched a complete game and struck out 11 as the Panthers defeated SWC rival Newtown at Doubleday Field on Saturday. Goldstein held the Nighthawks scoreless until the seventh, when they broke through for four runs.




    Security officer asks for hearing

    NEWTOWN -- The Board of Education listened to the public pleas of a lawyer representing a Newtown High School security director placed on paid administrative leave and will hold a hearing on the incident during a future executive session.School administrators placed Richard Novia on administrative leave immediately following a March 11 altercation involving him and a 17-year-old junior at the high school.




    Bomb scare closes Newtown school

    NEWTOWN -- Students were briefly evacuated from Newtown High School on Thursday due to a bomb threat written on a bathroom wall. Police responded to the threat about 9:30 a.m. A student found it and reported it to school administrators.Principal Charles Dumais said students were immediately evacuated from the building and escorted to the bleachers on the school's football field.




    New Fairfield rolls past Newtown

    Region 12 likely to miss vote by June

    It appears there won't be a vote on the solution to the elementary school issue in Region 12 before June, but one could happen next fall.It's the third year in a row the region will not get a project approved by June 30 for funding the following year by the state legislature.

    Local football stars set to defend state's honor

    -TIMES Danbury's Mike Escobar and Pomperaug's Matt Walker will be defensive teammates when Connecticut plays Rhode Island in the 10th annual Governor's Cup all-star football game June 28 at Rentschler Field in East Hartford. Escobar, who made the team as a cornerback, and Walker, a defensive lineman, survived tryouts attended by over 200 candidates to earn a spot on the 55-player roster.




    Goldstein delivers win for Panthers in Cooperstown

    COOPERSTOWN, N.Y. -- Pomperaug High pitcher Kyle Goldstein pitched a complete game and struck out 11 as the Panthers defeated SWC rival Newtown at Doubleday Field on Saturday. Goldstein held the Nighthawks scoreless until the seventh, when they broke through for four runs.




    River Oaks to host defensive driving golf

    The fourth annual Shepaug Valley High School defensive driving golf tournament will tee off May 27 at 9:30 a.m. at River Oaks Country Club in Sherman.The event will be hosted Shepaug student Sarah Haverly as her senior project.     Sherman barn sale on tap May 24-25

    The Sherman Historical Society will host its annual barn sale May 24 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and May 25 from 9 a.m. to noon.The event is the society's largest fundraiser, with proceeds to benefit the organization's Northrop House Museum, the old red barn and the Old Store Gift Shop and Museum.

    Washington Region 12 voters pass school budget

    Region 12 residents approved the $20.6 million school budget for 2008-09 by a vote of 505-299, which Town Clerk Sheila Anson described as "a very low turnout."The budget, representing a spending increase of 4.16 percent, passed in all three towns in the school district.




    Ridgefield teen faces drug charge

    RIDGEFIELD -- Police arrested a 16-year-old student at the high school on drug charges Friday.The teen -- police did not say whether it is a male or female student -- was charged with possession of marijuana and possession of marijuana with intent to sell, according to police.

    The Ridgefield Library, 472 Main St., will host a program about robotics on Wednesday at 7 p.m. that is free to the public.     Ridgefield voters reject budget

    RIDGEFIELD -- With a 22 percent voter turnout Tuesday , Ridgefield residents voted down the $121.8 million 2008-09 budget by 710 votes. Voters rejected the 3.53 percent tax increase the budget carried and responded in the negative to the Board of Finance adding $1 million to the revenue side of the budget to bring the increase down to that level.

    Fire officials stress safety to Ridgefield High seniors

    RIDGEFIELD -- Fire officials took the message of fire prevention to the graduating class of Ridgefield High School recently.Showing a video of a dorm fire that killed five students at the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill in 1997, they drove home the message that while buildings of brick and metal might not burn to the ground, their interiors and furnishings can burn -- releasing toxic fumes and black smoke that often take a more deadly toll than the flames do.
